What Is UROP?

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) cultivates and supports research partnerships between MIT undergraduates and faculty. One of the earliest programs of its kind in the United States, MIT’s UROP invites undergraduates to participate in research as the junior colleagues of Institute faculty. UROP offers the chance to work on cutting edge research — whether you join established research projects or pursue your own ideas.


The Laboratory for Nuclear Science provides support for research by faculty and research staff members primarily in the fields of basic nuclear and elementary particle physics.

Opportunities at LNS

The Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS) provides support for research by faculty and research staff members primarily in the fields of basic nuclear and elementary particle physics, including the activities of the Center for Theoretical Physics (CTP) in these fields. In addition, LNS supports computing resources for its research programs. The Laboratory has programs in experimental nuclear physics at several off-campus accelerator laboratories in the U.S. and abroad, including Jefferson Lab (Virginia), Brookhaven National Lab (New York), Oak Ridge National Lab (Tennessee), SNOlab (Canada), Mainz and Karlsruhe (Germany), and European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Switzerland. There are opportunities in detector and instrumentation development as well as in accelerator physics at the MIT-Bates Laboratory in Middleton, MA.

In high energy physics, activity in the U.S. occurs at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) in Batavia, Illinois. Abroad there are experiments at CERN and Chooz, France, as well as on the International Space Station. Much of the preparation for, and analysis of, these experiments takes place on the MIT campus.
