The church of Sacré Coeur sits atop la colline (hill) de Montmartre, overlooking the city with an amazing view. As the name suggests, the church was dedicated to the sacred heart of Jesus Christ, as penance for the French’s faults during the Franco-Prussian war of the 1870’s. As some French believed, the war was due to the nation’s spiritual problems, not its political ones – hence the church.
Even with the inclement weather, the Eiffel and Montparnasse towers were clearly visible in the distance. Inside, the mass was very solemn and intimate, despite the church’s size. This, however, was deeply contrasted by the choir’s size, whose voices resonated through the tall ceilings so as to reach God Himself.
