Cartel 2001 Logistics
Network Access
Let's get right to the most important issue: wireless network
access will be provided. Wired connections (10baseT) should also
be available. For either type of connection, advanced registration
of network cards will be necessary, so send your machine's MAC
address to Joseph Jackson <
jackson@CMU.EDU>.
We will also be able to loan Lucent WaveLAN cards for use during
the meeting. We will pre-register the cards on our network, but
you'll have to install the drivers ahead of time. Mac OS 9 users can
download the software from the
AirPort web page. Version 1.3 is not compatible with Lucent
cards, so be sure to download 1.3.1 or later. Windows users can go
to the "Software" section of the
ORiNOCO web site to download drivers.
Meeting Location![](new.gif)
The School of Computer Science has graciously offered us a room in
Newell-Simon Hall for the meeting. We will be in NSH 3305 for all
of the meeting except for lunch on some of the days. Check out
the official
campus map for the location of this brand new building. (Note
that the map doesn't orient North at the top of the page since
that would be too obvious.)
Meals
A continental breakfast and lunch will be served all three
days. We're planning two evening events for Thursday and Friday
that will include dinner.
If you have any dietary resrictions, please send mail to Joseph
Jackson <
jackson@CMU.EDU> with the details.
Social Events![](updated.gif)
We'll have social events on both Wednesday and Thursday evenings,
beginning with dinner. We expect to provide transportation to and
from both events. IBM Pittsburgh Labs (the former Transarc
Corporation) is sponsoring one of the events, so we owe them a big
thanks!
Wednesday: Gateway Clipper Cruise
It wouldn't be a Cartel meeting without a dinner cruise! We
continue the tradition of the past three years with a private
cruise on the three rivers aboard
Gateway Clipper's
Keystone Belle. The menu includes roasted chicken, baked ham, and
pasta shells florentine. A cash bar will be available.
We board at 5:30 pm and sail from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm.
Thursday: Dave & Busters
Dave & Buster's
is an arcade geared towards grown-ups combined with a very good
restaurant. We've reserved a room with a few pool tables and
shuffleboard tables. They also have an extensive arcade with a
variety of multi- and single-player games. Dinner will be their
"Fiesta Buffet", featuring beef or chicken fajitas and tacos. A
cash bar will be available. Our reservation is from 6:30 pm until
9:30 pm.
Local Transportation
There are a few options for getting between the airport and hotel.
- The Airlines Transportation shuttle goes to a number of
hotels on an hourly schedule. It costs $15 one-way or $26
round-trip. Purchase tickets at the USAirways ground
transportation desk near baggage claim in the airport.
- The county bus system also includes a shuttle called the PAT
28X that goes between the airport and Carnegie Mellon
campus. It's a little less convenient, but only costs $2
(cash-only) each way. The shuttle stop at the airport has a sign
listing the schedule; it tends to run three or four times an
hour. When arriving, the stop at the corner of S. Bellefield and
Fifth Avenues would bring you about one block from the
hotel. For returning to the airport, the shuttle stops right
across the street from campus and the hotel.
For getting from the hotel to campus and back again, the hotel
will provide shuttle service. For the evening events, we will
arrange for transportation.
