L. The Processing of Depth
Another
important depth cue is shading. An example of this appears in Figure
60. There is a clear sensation of protruding and receding
spheres brought about by the way shading is applied. This image is a product
of the inference that light from above, from the sun that is, lights up
objects that protrude and recede. At this time we know practically nothing
about the neural mechanisms that bring these sensations about.
