Tech and Wheaton played fairly even for
the first 20 minutes as both teams exchanged the lead several
times. Two jumpers by Danny Kanamori
and a big three from Mike D'Auria
allowed the Engineers to quietly pull in front, 25-19, as
the halftime horn sounded. In the first few minutes of the
second half the small momentum building at the end of the
opening frame exploded for MIT. After Andrew
Tsai buried threes on back-to-back possessions and center
Kyle Doherty added a soft jumper
off the glass, the Engineers vaulted to a 12-point lead and
never looked back. Kanamori scored a fastbreak layup with
8:27 remaining to play, pushing Tech to its largest lead of
the afternoon, 57-32. Playing conservative down the stretch,
coupled by missed free throw oppurtunities enabled Wheaton
to trim the deficit in the end as the Lyons limped home with
a mild 77-65 loss. Four players scored in double-figures for
the Engineers, with Tsai tieing a career-best with 21 to lead
all scorers. Doherty scored 15 from the post, while Kanamori
scored 13 and administered five assists. For the second straight
game, rookie Mike D'Auria provided an important spark from
the bench scoring 14 points and carolling a team-best six
rebounds.
