Looking to rebound after a heartbreaking
loss to Clark, the Engineers jumped out to an early 7-2 lead
off consecutive layups from freshman Adam
Gibbons. However, both teams made runs in the first half
as Wheaton rallied to score 13 unanswered points for a 15-7
advantage midway through the first half. MIT then went on
a 20-5 streak as sophomore Kyle Doherty
dominated the inside with several layups and easy putbacks.
The Engineers also got three-point baskets from freshman Eli
Sheets and junior Neal Brenner
during that stretch. Juniors Sebastian
Heersink and Alex Phillips
also contributed strong minutes off the bench as the Engineers
opened a 27-20 lead. But Wheaton would answer yet again, closing
the half on a 13-4 run to give them a 33-31 edge heading into
the locker room.
MIT took control early in the second stanza,
outscoring Wheaton 20-8 in taking their biggest advantage
of the game at 51-41 with just over 13 minutes to play. Freshman
Danny Kanamori paced the Enginners
during that stretch as he was able to find Doherty
and freshman Mike Huhs inside for easy
layups. The Engineers were able to maintain their lead for
most of the half as Doherty's consecutive
baskets gave the Engineers a 68-60 lead with five minutes
left to play. However, Wheaton again went on another run,
converting off MIT turnovers and cutting the lead to just
one, 73-72, with under a minute remaining. Finally, after
yet another MIT turnover, Wheaton called timeout with 7 seconds
remaining. Off the inbounds play, Wheaton guard, Luke Gordon,
despite a heavy double team, hit an off-balanced three-pointer
to give Wheaton the victory, while handing the Engineers its
second consecutive conference loss at the buzzer.
