Looking for its first conference victory,
MIT took the early lead as sophomore Kyle
Doherty scored six of the first eight points for the Engineers.
Freshman Adam Gibbons and junior
Neal Brenner then hit a couple three-pointers
as MIT lead 20-11 before Springfield went on a 10-0 run with
the help of their zone defense to retake the lead. However,
the Engineers eventually retook the lead with a jumper by
junior forward Boris Paskalev as
the Engineers led 24-23 going into halftime.
After trading baskets for the early portion
of the second half, the Engineers caught fire from the outside
and put the game out of reach. Freshman Danny
Kanamori had five consecutive baskets at one point, before
giving way to freshman Eli Sheets
who caught fire with four consecutive 3-pointers against Springfield's
zone. Sheets' 14 second half points
ignited the Engineers as their defense shut down Springfield
down the stretch, Brenner holding
the conference's leading scorer, John Gleason, to 2-8 from
the field, and Mike Huhs stiffling
Michael Parker who has been the conference player of the week
twice this year already. Then with Springfield forced to play
man to man, Kyle Doherty brought the fans out of their seats
with a monster dunk, plus a foul, off a pretty pass from Kanamori
with a little over five minutes remaining. Kanamori
finished with a triple double for the Engineers who improved
to 1-1 in conference play.
